FOOD HANDLER CARD CLASSROOM TRAINING

The CA Food Handler Card training is a 2½ hour classroom instruction with test. The course is taught  by our former Sonoma County Registered Environmental Health Specialist (health inspector). Bob Herr has seen it all, and makes the training fun and exciting.  The test is offered in English or Spanish.

The cost of the training with exam is $20 – $29 depending on the number of students.

The test consists of 40 multiple choice questions. The CA Food Handler Card is issued with a score 70% or better on the test.

The training provides basic, introductory instruction on the following elements of knowledge:

  1. Foodborne illnesses, microorganisms, potentially hazardous foods, and understanding of major contributing factors for foodborne illness
  2. The relationship between time and temperature with respect to foodborne illness, and the use and calibration of thermometers used in monitoring food temperatures
  3. The relationship between personal hygiene and food safety
  4. Methods of preventing food contamination in all stages of food handling
  5. Procedures for cleaning and sanitizing equipment and utensils
  6. Proper temperature control and prevention of cross contamination.

California Retail Food Code (Cal Code) now requires that food handlers obtain a Food Handler Card within 30 days of hiring. The CA Food Handler Card is valid for three years from the date issued.
